Natalie Off Duty

In this edition of Blogger Hot Minute, the ThreadSence team was honored to brunch it up with Natalie Suarez of Natalie Off Duty. This 5' 10" half Chinese, half Spanish beauty from Los Angeles finds herself modeling by day, while painting the fashion blogging world red by night. Many of you may already know of her, follow her blog, or ogle over her eye-gasmic photo shoots with mega brands (Free People, Joe's Jeans, Volcom, & Mango, to name a few). If that's the case, then you may also be aware of the irony that resides in her blog's title. While "off duty" from the demanding world of modeling, she is anything but that as a blogger.

We first met this busy bee back in February at the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas, as she and her sister were one of a handful of bloggers hosting the Teen Vogue booth. We immediately connected and felt adamant about meeting up with her again. Fast forward two months later and here we were having brunch, soaking up the sunny southern California sun with Natalie and her amazing sister, Dylana. Joined by two past Blogger Hot Minute sweethearts Liz (Late Afternoon) and Rachel (ThatsChic), it was something that the ThreadSence team thoroughly enjoyed. Take a look at the pictures from Vegas, our sun-filled SoCal day, and also a couple of videos we whipped up on our YouTube channel to stimulate the senses. We're pretty sure you'll fall in love with Natalie as we did. We are extremely happy to have crossed paths with Natalie and look forward to having her around the ThreadSence blogger family for years to come.

And on a quick side note, the ThreadSence team wanted to personally wish Dylana Suarez (Color Me Nana) a smashing time in Philadelphia as she takes her talents and that adorable smile to the Free People team. We are excited to announce that we will be partnering up with her blog in the upcoming weeks. So stay tuned for some utterly awesome collaborations! WE LOVE YOU!!!!

1. What inspired or motivated you to start your blog?
My sister, who had a blog, introduced me to the top fashion blogs and I instantly became inspired. They were addicting. I started guest blogging on her blog by posting photos of my outfits. Soon after, I decided to start my own blog, Natalie Off Duty, showcasing what I wear "off duty" as a model. I also make sure to post behind the scenes images from my photoshoots, travels, as well as coverage of events I attend as a model and blogger.

2. How did you decide on the format and style of your blog (i.e. Styling outfits and posing for the camera)?
As a model, I quickly developed my own personal style. For castings, I always have to stand out and really began with picking up a ton of vintage pieces. Most of my wardrobe is vintage and so I mix it with new fashion forwards pieces. On photoshoots and with others styling me, I instantly knew what worked for me and what didn't. Posing in front of the camera became natural. I'm still surprised at how comfortable I am in front of the camera.

3. Where do you currently reside? Where would you ideally like to reside?
I live in the valley area of Los Angeles. Sometimes I like leaving the hectic city of LA and going back to my house where it is quiet and peaceful. I'm originally from Santa Monica, right by the beach. I definitely see myself moving back there in the future.

4. What is your must-have article of clothing or accessory right now?
Right now, I cannot live without a great pair of lace up bootie heels. They are perfect for castings. With a rubber sole, I can go everywhere and anywhere in them!

5. If you were stranded on an island and had only one fashion item to your liking, what would it be?

I would definitely bring myself a floppy hat. Good sun protection and of course, it looks super chic.

6. What are your favorite fashion and style blogs right now?
I am quite obsessed with Stockholm Streetstyle. The photography is beautiful and so are the people. It seems like everyone in Sweden has such unique, classic style. I love the way they dress. For personal style blogs, I am in love with Blushing Ambition, Late Afternoon, Style Scrapbook, The Blonde Salad, Song of Style, and of course my sister's blog, Color Me Nana. Great writing and outfits. Plus, the photography is stunning.

7. What do you like to do when not blogging about fashion?
When I am not blogging about fashion, I'm usually working. I'm always out and about at castings or photoshoots. As a blogger, I always carry my camera with me in my purse in case I come across something I want to photograph. Also, I love to sing and play the piano and guitar. Sometimes I wish I had more time to focus on music, but modeling has been keeping me so busy. I also read a lot. I have to start my morning with the newspaper and I tend to borrow too many books from the library! On the weekends, I love to hike and ride my bike.

8. If we were to dig through your cassette tapes.....err cds....crap, we meant iPod, what would we find?
You would definitely find a lot of Bob Dylan. He is my favorite. I love my classic rock like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Some new tunes would be by Sun Kil Moon as well as Vampire Weekend. You'll come across hip hop/dance music like Eryka Badu and the occassional catchy Rihanna song!

9. All that blogging must take up a lot of energy. What is your favorite food to munch on in order to provide you with your Super Blogging Powers?
I am definitely an eater. My favorite snack would probably be whole wheat toast with a lot of Nutella spread on it! Also, bananas. I love bananas with peanut butter! More importantly, I cannot start my day without coffee and I like it strong!

10. Favorite Designer:
Right now, I love Dries Van Noten. I love their classic cuts and vintage inspired feel. I love Rebecca Taylor for her feminine, beautiful pieces. For more edgy and casual pieces, I lean towards Alexander Wang.
