ThreadSence fans, meet the brains and beauty behind Stela 9. Jessica Bercovici burst onto the fashion scene in 2010 with head turning designs unlike any other. Her bags caught our attention soon after their debut and we’ve been riding on cloud Stela 9 ever since. We managed to squeeze in a few hours of quality time with Jessica at her house in LA to find out what she’s been up to. When she’s not busy putting in the daily grind with Stela 9, she can be found daydreaming about her time spent in Guatemala. Her undeniable love for that country is evident the moment we stepped into her house. Our eyes feasted on hand-woven textiles with an abundance of colors, textures, and shapes everywhere we turned. Similar to her designs, her interior décor and sense of artistic style are irresistible on varying levels. It’s no wonder why Stela 9 and its designer are being sought after by retailers near and far. Jessica of Stela 9, meet the ThreadSence fans.
Describe your design aesthetic
in 7 words.
Was fashion the only option? What would the YOU of another dimension be doing?
No, definitely not. I went through a phase where I changed what I wanted to be about every two years. First it was an actress, then a pro snowboarder (before I realized that I would never be THAT good), the next Jane Goodall, mesoamerican archaeologist (aka the next Indiana Jones), photographer, animal shelter owner, vegan cookbook author ... the list really goes on and on and becomes more and more ridiculous - eco conscious handbag designer.
What's inspired you in the last 24 hours?
My dog, Ito.
I’m using these really beautiful anthropomorphic textiles as inspiration for SS 2014. He looks so much like some of the creatures in the embroidery that I just fell in love. He’s definitely going to be featured in this weaving, just wait and see...
What musician/artist/celebrity would you love to see most in your collection?
Honey Boo Boo. She desperately needs Stela 9 in her life. Can you hook me up with her PR?
There are aspiring fashion designers all over the world. What words of wisdom would you send their way?
Truly listen to yourself and understand your capabilities. Determination and self-awareness are really important qualities that together create successful individuals. Know what you’re good at, and then go out there and be the f’ing best at it and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Success is measured differently by individuals. What is a mark of success that you have set for 2013 and the immediate future?
Currently I’m trying to create enough structure and foundation here in LA to move to Guatemala for a few years. Once I make that move, I’ll definitely feel like 2013 has been successful. As for the immediate future, getting my @ss to India to finish our collection (both pulling the funds and finding the time). I love how all of my goals and measures for success are travel related. That is, after all, the whole reason Stela 9 was started.
